Genuine Craftsmanship and International Sponsoring
SEILER Pianoforte ranks among Europe’s largest piano factories and exports its grand and upright pianos to over five different countries on all five continents.
SEILER was in the founding family’s hands for five generations and was established in 1849 by pianist and craftsman Eduard Seiler in the Silesian town of Liegritz. Recently, SEILER has become a member of Samick Music Corporation.
As early as in the 1870s, SEILER won first prizes for its pianos – including those awarded in Vienna and Moscow – and in the following years was to become a purveyor to the German and Russian Imperial Courts and to the Italian Royal Family. Countless places in Berlin, Amsterdam, Milan, Melbourne, Tokyo, Philadelphia, Boston and Chicago testify to the esteem in which SEILER’s instruments were held all over the globe.
At the end of World War II in 1945, SEILER lost its factory in eastern Germany. However, the fourth generation of the Seiler family under Steffen Seiler went on to rebuild the company in Bavaria in West Germany. Steffen Seiler risked his life at the end of the war when everything was collapsing around him to preserve the scale designs, plate designs and measurements to assure there would be a future company.
In the international marketplace SEILER stands for a corporate philosophy resting on five pillars reflected in the terms: Quality, Artistic Craftsmanship, Innovativeness, Price/Performance Ratio, and Tonal Beauty.
All five terms are objectively verifiable:
Quality, because SEILER is the only manufacturer allowed to stamp all its instruments with the “RAL Quality Seal of German Pianos” as the result of regularly performed inspections. Design, production and materials are thus governed solely by quality-inspected criteria, mandatory for all SEILER model series. To make quality visible for all to see, SEILER developed its so-called “Phantom Grand”, which was first displayed at the NAMM Show 1999 in Los Angeles. This grand piano, cut in half down the middle not only demonstrates the patents SEILER has developed over the past 20 years, but also exemplifies the exquisite materials which go into all SEILER instruments, the quality of which is truly without compare.
Artistic Craftsmanship, the 2nd pillar of SEILER’s philosophy, rests on SEILER’s global acclaim as a trendsetter in the processing of special woods, veneers and intarsias. No other manufacturer in the world offers such a diversity of grands and uprights in so many different finishes as SEILER. This is attributable to the centuries-old tradition of German craftsmanship which has resulted in a culture of artistic cabinet-making, the fruits of which can be admired in all SEILER’s instruments. Over fifty different veneers and its own inlaid work have made SEILER the world’s number one address for exclusive piano cabinets.
Innovativeness, the 3rd SEILER pillar, is reflected in a stream of pioneering patents launched over the past 20 years. Examples include:
- The world’s first acoustic grand with full MIDI capabilities as the key to the realms of electronic music; today this invention is available as the SEILER DuoVox System in all SEILER grands and uprights.
- The SEILER upright pianos equipped with the patented Super Magnet Repetition Action, enabling an unsurpassed speed of repetition comparable to that of a grand.
- The SEILER Membrator System that improves the vibration capabilities of the soundboard.
- The SEILER Tonal Volume Stabilizer that enhances the beauty of tone in the course of the years.
- All these patents – developed and executed by SEILER’s highly qualified piano makers and engineers – have helped to reinforce SEILER’s reputation as one of the world’s most innovative piano manufacturers.
An Unrivaled price/Performance ratio is the 4th SEILER pillar, because no other manufacturer offers instruments of top-class international quality at such attractive prices as SEILER.
The 5th and last pillar of SEILER’s philosophy is tonal beauty. Fact is, the unmistakable transparency of sound has become the signature tune for the SEILER brand on all continents.
With this philosophy and as the piano factory with the greatest on-site production capability in Germany, SEILER has helped to make the label “Made in Germany” synonymous with outstanding quality.
Between 1849 and 2003, 860 dealers across the globe have sold almost 170,000 SEILER grand and upright pianos to music enthusiasts in Europe, Russia, Japan, China, Australia, Canada and the United States, where they are used for the interpretation not only of Baroque, Classical and Romantic music, but also for that of contemporary music and in show business as well. Enrico Caruso, Ferruccio Busoni, Jacques Loussier, Ray Charles, Jesse Dixon and Edwin Hawkins are just a few of those artists whose careers are associated with the name of SEILER. Remember, those sales figures were only through 2003, and obviously many more have been sold in the last 10 years as well.
The promotion of young talents has always been close to SEILER’s heart in its role as a sponsor of the arts. This is why, on the occasion of SEILER’s 150th anniversary, the Steffen Seiler Association for the Promotion of Piano Music was founded. The charitable association is dedicated to the widespread promotion of piano playing as a cultural, spiritual, and creative way of life and sponsors music festivals, master courses, competitions, scholarships, and concert activities for young talents on a world-wide basis. With these activities the association upholds the humanistic picture of music in which piano playing not only promotes social culture but also shapes the individual’s personal lifestyle.
In its role as a piano building and cultural authority, SEILER will continue to contribute to the preservation and promotion of international music culture.
